God. Nature. Work.

Family memorial composition from glass and stone

This family memorial composition of three generations includes a combined glass and field rock headstone and the arrangement of the gravesite. This combined headstone marks the monument site in Jelgava that unites the roots of three generations – Beimaņi, Zariņi and Putni. This extraordinarily beautiful memorial site was created with the love of Latvian nature, culture and traditions that this family has embodied throughout the generations to the present day.

The successors of the family traditions - Maijas family - chose the title of the autobiographical trilogy “God. Nature. Work.” by Latvian author Anna Brigadere as the right words, seeing as it combined the lives and values of not only one, but many family members.

Remembering their lost ones, the family speaks of dedicated work ethics, undying love of new knowledge and the cultivation of skills. The members of these three generations represented professions such as teacher, pharmacist, carpenter, carter, farmer, builder, marksman and others.

With this gravesite composition, the family wanted to show the honour and care toward others, nature and work, with which the members of the many generations were endowed. Symbolically, God is represented by the glass elements of the headstone; Nature - by the mint and pebble background, and work - by the grey fieldstone with rosy veins and the name and date engravings on the polished surface.

The names on the headstone, surrounded by the dates of their lifetimes, are those of known family members. However, we address our beloved ones simply by name. When looking at the dance of the rays of light in glass and stone, we dwell on memories: the warm hands of grandmother Emīlija, her ornate embroidered doilies and crochets. Grandfather Ādolfs stories of horses, Jelgava before the war, his peacefulness when taking care of the apple and cherry trees in his garden, and Dindoņa cucumbers. The beautiful handwriting of Mother Dzidra, her knowledge of herbs and medicine, her ability to always listen to others, and her love and devotion to her granddaughters. The unique handmade furniture of Father Harijs - tables, benches, wardrobes, the lathed goblets and plates, and his helpfulness toward others. And lastly, conversations about the true and the old, faith in the future, travel through Latvia’s most beautiful locations and the care for each other in moments of illness and hard times.

There are many last names on the headstone to emphasise the generations’ greatness and meaning. Here, we also remember the brothers of grandmother Emīlija – Augusts, Osvalds and Voldemārs – talented farmers and landlords, who, in 1944 were made to continue their lives in exile along with their families.

We also remember the dear brother of mother Dzidra – Auseklis. Unfortunately, the education of the young and talented pupil of Hercoga Jēkaba gymnasium was interrupted by the call-up into the german army, and his life was cut short in Königsberg.

Stories like these aren’t forgotten. The awareness of the family history gives strength to new generations, like roots, that carry this strength from the soil to the saplings.

“God give to climb up the mountain,

Not to descend,

God give to bestow upon others,

Not to ask of them.”

(Latvian folk song)
